SOL-Perpetua™ Solar Water Heating System Installation Instructions and Operating Manual For Series "A" Pumps
SOL Perpetua™ System Installation - Pipe Insulation
Apply insulation to the pipe carrying hot working fluid down to the heat exchanger. The cold pipe returning working fluid to the bubble pump need only be insulated where it is exposed in the attic and above the roof. Only when the storage tank is full of hot water will the returning fluid be warm enough to lose a significant amount of heat as it passes through the heated portion of a house.
Pipe insulation should be able to withstand 100 C (212 F) such as Armaflex by Armstrong. Some of the foam plastic insulations will shrink considerably at this temperature and must not be used. Above the roof the insulation should be protected from the sun and rain by suitable plastic or metal coverings.
Insulate the outlet pipe at the top of the storage tank a minimum distance of half a metre (18 inches). Insulated tank coverings are available to help offset the high heat loss from old style tanks. (see Componemts of a SOL Perpetua™ System, Storage Tank).
